The Perky Freshie: Zoen Rubio

Zoen Rubio
BS Communications Technology Management, Block R2
Studio 23 "Old School" star
If you're given a choice among different shots at fame, what would you choose? A blog feature? An appearance at a teen magazine fair? A modeling job for a fashion magazine? Why not choose all? Well, apparently, that's what Zoen did. What's more? He has already made a name for himself in a self-produced show named the "Jo and Zoen Show" with a friend. And even MORE. He got to work and star on Studio 23's "Old School," a show which features natural landmarks and cultural centers. Talk about social responsibility and fame.

Zoen says that it's not about getting fame and influence for yourself. What matters most is the experience that you get when you meet, work, and interact with different people. This must be one of the reasons why he chose ComTech for his course. Here's a head's up for Zoen Rubio, a witty and perky Freshie.

Why did you choose Ateneo?
I didn't. Ateneo chose me.

Favorite hangouts in Ateneo?
The chapel, of course. I also hang out with my block at Faura every lunch. I also love going to the covered courts after classes to play ball.

So, care to share with us a protip on balancing acad stuff, org-life, and social life?
It's all about setting one's priorities. One would always be more important than the other. For example: Instead of doing my research paper, I'm doing this.

So, how does a Zoen Rubio kill his time?
When I'm not fighting criminals, studying to find a cure for cancer, or making the world a better place. I chill with my friends, play ball, and just relax.

If you become a famous person one day, what would you want to be quoted for?
I'd like to be quoted for being an inspiration to the younger generation and the future leaders of this nation. Imagination. 8)

Did you make a significant discovery in your life?
Yesterday, I dropped a banana peel and accidentally stepped on it. I slipped. I thought it only works on tv.

Who is your favorite Pokemon?
Dark Magician

Do you have any hidden or not-so-hidden talents you'd like to share?
I'm really a good singer when no one's around. My shower head thinks I have an angelic voice. I just tend to choke when I know I'm being watched.

We heard that you used to work on a show called the "Jo and Zoen Show". What happened to it?
My blockmate and high school classmate for 3 years, Jo Santos, asked me to work with him for a video presentation for our section's party. We did a "Poker Face" video. We got great reviews so by popular demand, we made a show. We got a bit lazy after a few episodes so we stopped making videos.

Any chances of it being revised?
We just might start making new videos this year. If we have the time. And the money....

There are some rumors that you were able to rub shoulders with some big-shot magazines. Are they true. How were your experiences?
I've never been featured in Candy magazine. I was only a guest at last year's Candy Fair. We're working on a new tv show and we were invited to promote to the Candy mag readers. I only stayed for a while. All I can say is that the Candy readers are wiiiild.

I've worked with Chalk magazine though. I was in three issues of 2011. I was one of their "20 Boys of Summer" feature (April), one of the models for "Meet the New Party Kids" feature (October), and one of their "50 Hottest Guys '11" feature (Dec 2011/January 2012). The experience is great! You get to work with different people, meet new friends, and be on a magazine.
"Yup, this is my Pokemon."
(Although Dark Magician's really from Yu-Gi-Oh!)

The Artsy Girl: Marie Aquino

Marie Aquino
AB European Studies, Block G
Matanglawin Art Department Member

Talk about being artsy! Truly artistic at heart, Marie's number one hobby is painting. In fact, she paints for Matanglawin's art department and is also a "photographer-in-training". (Matanglawin is Ateneo's official student magazine in the Filipino language.)

Her second hobby? Singing. A musically-inclined girl, Marie is also active in AMP, or the Ateneo Musician's Pool. She just loves to be surrounded by music, which is why she volunteers in different AMP events like the soloist night.

Marie is not only active within school, but also beyond. She spends her Sundays in service and is proud to be a church worker.

By trying to enhance her talents, Marie truly shows others what she is made of. Magis, indeed. An Atenean we could be proud of. Good going, Marie!

Why did you choose Ateneo?
I find it better than other colleges/universities. Plus, it's in a good location.

Favorite hangouts in Ateneo?
Gonzaga Up. I don't usually have long breaks. 2 hours max, so yeah, I just eat.

How do you balance your time?
I study at home since I go home early, eat when I get the chance to, and most importantly, I dedicate time for prayer (even just a few minutes is good).

What fun things do you do in your free time?
I spend most of my free time eating. I also go to this internet and gaming cafe with my block mates and we play Dance Central or Rock Band there. Other times I paint/draw/doodle and listen to music.

If given the chance to do a speech, what would you want to be quoted for?
Hmm...something related to having peace and enjoying life while doing something good for others.

Do you have a funny memory from your childhood?
Umm...I'd go with my aunt to Makati a lot when I was younger. One time, I was in a hurry crossing a street and I thought I was holding on to my aunt's hand. Well, I wasn't holding her hand. It was some random person's hand. I stopped and walked to the opposite direction..

Who is your favorite Pokemon?
Squirtle or Pikachu. Or Wobbuffet.

Marie says, "Wobbuffet is cute."

Blue Babble Drummer: Jiro Bote

Jiro Bote
BS Management Information Systems, Block S1
Snare Player (Ateneo Blue Babble Band)
There's nothing like school spirit during UAAP games. The crowd, the players, the cheers, the cheerleaders, and the drumbeats form an indescribable bliss. Ateneans should know because they go through great heights (not to mention long lines) just to get that prized ticket and witness it all.

But what if you don't have to line up to be able to watch a game? What if you can be a part of those who aim to rouse school spirit? What if you create the drumbeats?

Yes, that's the Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion, a group of student athletes that cheer and support Ateneo UAAP teams. Jiro is one of them. He plays the snare drum for the band.

He shares that being part of the Blue Babble band is fun because he gets to bond with different people regardless of their year and age. And that it is altogether a wonderful and unique experience.

Why did you choose Ateneo?
It is my dream to study in Ateneo de Manila University. I remember back when I was just in Prep, I told myself that I would study in Ateneo when I get to college. For me, Ateneo is where I really belong. Ateneo is the place where I want to grow as a person.

Favorite hangouts in Ateneo?
I like hanging out in chill places like the Babble bench near Sec C and the Rizal Library.

How do you balance your time?
I balance my time by planning my activities a week beforehand. By doing so, I manage my time wisely which gives me the opportunity to do more.

What fun things do you do in your free time?
Hang out with friends, play Monopoly Deal, and eat

Any favorite quote?
"Do your best and God will do the rest."

Do you have a funny memory from your childhood?
When I was a kid, my family and I ate at Ramen Tei (Tomas Morato branch back then) and I ate a lot of ramen. Because I was so excited to eat the ramen, I wasn't able to chew and digest in properly. After a few hours, I threw up.

Who is your favorite Pokemon?
Charizard

Quatro Kid: Germaine Kaw

Germaine Kaw
BS Management-Honors, Block Q
Straight-A Student
Believe it or not, she got straight-As in the first semester with a QPI of 4.0. Yes, you read it right. Germaine is a Quatro Kid!

According to the Lipad Orsem 2011 planner: "The envy of every Atenean, the Quatro Kid has never seen a grade lower than B in his transcript of grades in his entire stay at the Ateneo. Teachers praise him, other students want to be like him, while others wonder if he came from a different planet."

But like many others, she enjoys going on 9gag and playing Monopoly Deal and other card games with friends and blockmates. So, erase those crazy ideas. Germaine obviously comes from the planet Earth.

She believes that she should never force herself to do anything she doesn't feel like doing. Maybe, just maybe, that's her secret to it all.

Additional info: Being the business-minded type, Germaine, together with some friends, also owns "The Garlic Kick", which you may have tried last September from the SEC field! They offered Roast Beef Fury, Smashing Spareribs, and Chicken Roundhouse Kick.

Why did you choose Ateneo?
I chose the Ateneo because I've always wanted to pursue a business course and I've heard that Ateneo has the best to offer.

Favorite hangouts in Ateneo?
Last semester, it was Gonzaga. This semester, I think it'll be JSEC. Any place, actually, as long as there's food and we can play cards and burn time. :))

How do you balance your time?
I don't. HAHAHAHA. My theory is that I should never force myself to do anything that I'm not in the mood for. Why add self-inflicted mental and emotional pressure when the workload in itself is already hard to handle? I usually just go with the flow and somehow, it works better for me.

What fun things do you do in your free time?
9gag! Or perhaps a game of M. Deal or tongits with my friends and blockmates.

If given the chance to do a speech, what would you want to be quoted for?
Believe and be free

Do you have a funny memory from your childhood?
Hmmmmm, not that I remember. I usually block out memories of funny and embarrassing moments that I had back when I was young. :))

Favorite Pokemon? Why?
I think it'll be Mew because it's soooo cute, not to mention really powerful, too.

What were your favorite shows from the 90s?
Dragonball, Ghost Fighter and Invader Zim. I usually watched TV with my brothers so I didn't really have much of a choice but to watch what they were watching back then. :))

Isn't Mew cute?
